The Brief
A structural survey complete by Mott MacDonald identified defects around the building and on the roof. These defects were given priorities for repair; within 6 months, between 2-3 years & between 5-10 years. There were also remedial coating works suggested for the roof of the generation building.
The Solution
SWCR were instructed to repair “within 6 months” priority defects. We first broke out the defective concrete and treated it before repairing with a Structural Repair Mortar.
Originally SWCR were to remove the skylight covers and repair the upstands around each skylight. Unfortunately when we removed the first cover it became apparent that the extent of corrosion to the frames was so severe the skylights themselves will need to be replaced as a later project. As the upstands to the skylights were still accessible without removing any covers, it was agreed that we would patch repair around the skylights, concentrating on those within the priority area. The skylights and upstands were cleaned, insulation strips were fitted around the upstand bases. The individual areas were primed and then covered with fibre glass matting. Once the fibre glass was fitting and rollered into the embedment coating, this was also done in-between the skylight and the central drainage channel, this then gave a waterproof seal to this area.
