Client: Torbay Council
Main contractor: Midas Construction LTD
Work involved: Concrete Repairs & Carbon Strengthening
Date: October 2020
The Brief
A structural inspection condition survey of the car park was completed in June 2020, which found that concrete repairs were needed to Beams and soffits. And that three of the reinforced concrete beams needed carbon strengthening to mitigate the shift in bending.
The Solution
The defects to the soffit and underside of the beams were repaired using traditional concrete repair methods. The defective concrete was broken out, steel reinforcement cleaned to remove any corrosion and then primed with a steel protective coating, finally a bonding aid was applied and the defect repaired with a a polymer modified concrete repair mortar.
The Carbon Strengthening System to 3 Beams included grinding and preparation of the surfaces, fitting two carbon fibre strips to the full length underside of the Beams (double thickness for extra strength), drilling and fitting S&P C-anchors (carbon fibre fantails) and sheer wraps to the sides and bottoms of the beams at 600mm spacings before dressing the fantails to fully bond the wraps.
